Wildcrafting and Edible Landscapes
Given the current world situations, is it any wonder that the average citizen is feeling just a little nervous about his future and the well being of his friends and family??? I know I am.
There are some movements happening around the Planet in present time that I feel are important and worth passing onto you. One is a campaign being started to get the general populace into gardening and the growing of their own food. Some people are having to learn from the ground up J the ancient skills of how to grow food for the table. During World War I and II, Victory Gardens were grown by most Americans and the health of the nation skyrocketed to all-time highs. Food grown in your own garden cannot be beat for freshness and nutrient value. An excellent book to have and read is “The War Garden Victorious” by Charles Lathrop Pack. My copy of the book is copyright 1919 and you will find it by searching the title and author on the internet. Purchase a book copy with an Appendix that has “Two of the Victory Books Issued By The Commission – “War Gardening and Home Storage of Vegetables” and “Home Canning and Drying”. Extension Centers in most cities are also an excellent source of information about the plants in your area as well as classes available to learn how to grow a garden.
I urge you to learn the essential survival skills of growing your own food in order to counter the inferior quality of food production over the past century. Genetically Modified Organism technology now dominates over 95% of the Soy and Corn markets here in America with NO GMO labeling laws. At this writing, Monsanto is trying to put a patent on genetically modified Pigs, Fish and other Frankenfoods. This is downright scary.
This new gardening movement along with Wildcrafting are our two best solutions. Many people are now joining Community & Home Gardening Movements, but few have heard of “Gleaning / Gathering” or Wildcrafting as I like to call it. Food growing naturally in the wild is already there and all one needs is the simple knowledge of what to look for, where to look for it, and how to prepare it once it has been gathered.
Did you know that the State of Florida is loaded with Wild Rice growing naturally in many of its swamps and coastal lands? Did you know there are many local, wild plants growing in woods and parks around where you live that are edible? Not only are they edible, they’re actually great tasting and some of the most nutrient dense foods you could ever wish for. I don’t know of one of these wild foods that isn’t completely loaded with enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and high quality fiber. These foods can actually contribute to excellent health to the point that you and your family can become disease proof by eating them.
There are books on the subject of Wildcrafting and I highly recommend you start collecting them. Get yourself busy learning how to identify these great foods that are FREE for the picking. Many of these books have great recipes in them as well. Even in very dry and semi-dry areas, there are cacti and other desert plants that can keep you alive indefinitely if you’d only learn about them. Some of these Wild foods can even be found in the Winter. Those who take the time to get this knowledge will have priceless survival skills under their belt from here on out. This is wise!
I wish you bountiful Wildcrafting and many fruitful crops from your edible landscape. 🙂
Yours in Knowledge, Health and Freedom,
Doc
